2021 SECTIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP TIDBITS FOR LOCAL/MICHIANA TEAMS

Class 6A, Sectional 1: Merrillville at Lafayette Jeff
—Pirates are 3-0 all time, and only school to beat Jeff in 2019 & 2020
—Jeff is #1 in class 6A averaging 45.9 ppg (Merr 3rd at 44.2)
—Pirates have won 13 sectionals, 10 in the past 17 years including the last two.
—Broncos have won 5 sectionals, the last in 2002.

Class 6A, Sectional 2: Chesterton at Penn
—Trojans won 20-14 for their first ever win vs Penn in round 1 last year
—Penn hasn’t won any of the past 3 sectional titles, since they won 1st, they have
never gone 4 years without winning one.
—Chesterton looking for their elusive 1st sectional (0-8 in sectional finals all time)
—The past 6 weeks Penn hasn’t allowed more than 17, and the only team to score
more than 17 on Chesterton was Merrillville (week 9–40)

Class 6A, Sectional 3: Warsaw at Carroll
—Rematch of last year, won by Tigers 42-35 in round 1.
—2014 was the only time in 7 prior meetings the visiting team won (Carroll leads series 4-3)
—Neither school has lost to a 6A school–Carroll lost to Luers, Warsaw lost to MC & Concord
—Warsaw seeking just 2nd sectional crown, while Carroll seeks their first since 2014 (6th overall).

Class 5A, Sectional 9: Valparaiso at Munster
—Second meeting in three years, first one won by the Vikings 69-6 in 2019.
—The only other time these two played in Munster was 1987 season opener, a 10-7 Mustang victory.
—Munster’s last sectional final appearance was 2016 vs Lowell under the legend Leroy Marsh.
—Valpo seeking their school-best 4th straight sectional title and 14th overall.

Class 5A, Sectional 10: Michigan City at Mishawaka
—Mishawaka 3-0 all time vs the Wolves, including an 18-7 win in their last meeting in 2016.
—This is the third time in four meetings the game has been played in Mishawaka.
—All 3 of City’s losses came in the DAC to schools who are playing for sectional titles
—MC averages 37.3 ppg, but 44.4 ppg in their 7 wins. Mish has averaged 43.8ppg the last 4 games.

Class 4A, Sectional 17: Hobart at Lowell
—Third straight year these two have met for the sectional title (HHS has won the previous 2)
—Prior to 2019, Lowell had won the previous 6 postseason meetings, including against Coach Howell in 1994.
—Hobart won 39-27 in week 5, Lowell has won 6 straight since then.
—Since losing to the two DAC schools, Hobart has averaged 48.3ppg in 9 games.

Class 4A, Sectional 18: South Bend St Joseph’s at New Prairie
—Cougars are 8-2 all-time vs St Joe’s, including a 35-0 win in week 5.
—St Joe’s one of three schools in class 4A playing for a sectional title with a losing record.
—New Prairie seeking their 7th sectional title, and 5th in the past 9 seasons.
—Four of New Prairie’s wins have come against 5A & 6A schools, including Lowell and Penn.

Class 4A, Sectional 19: Leo at Northridge
—Leo beat Northridge 14-7 in last year’s tournament–their only win ever against the Raiders
—Leo has not won a sectional title since 2011. Northridge’s only title came in 2014.
—Leo is 31-4 combined the past three seasons, three of those losses came to East Noble, who they narrowly defeated in round 1.
—Three of Northridge’s 4 losses have come to Warsaw, Concord, and Mishawaka.

Class 3A, Sectional 25: Hanover Central at Knox
—First ever meeting between these two schools.
—Second time in 8 years of the program Hanover has won 10 games (2016-Koulianos)
—2nd straight year Wildcats in the sectional final, seeking the school’s first sectional crown
—Knox defeated Calumet in 2019 for the school’s only sectional title.

Class 3A, Sectional 26: Jimtown at Mishawaka Marian
—Marian has a 7-3 lead in the series, including a 44-19 win in last year’s sectional final
—Jimtown has won 22 sectionals, but none since 2014.
—Jimtown has won 9 straight after an 0-2 start. Marian also started 0-2 and has won 8 of 9 (Penn the only L)
—Marian defeated previously unbeaten Tippecanoe Valley 29-0 last week.

Class 2A, Sectional 33: Andrean at Whiting
—Niners won 38-6 last year in the only previous meeting between these two.
—With a win, Andrean would become the second Region school to win 20 sectionals (Hobart-22)
—Andrean’s in-state losses came at Merrillville and at Lowell.
—Whiting has won 3 straight for the first time since Jeff Cain’s final season in 2018, the Oilers’ last sectional title.

Class 2A, Sectional 34: Pioneer at LaVille
—Pioneer has won all 8 meetings, including a narrow 12-7 in week 3 earlier this season.
—LaVille has won 4 sectionals, the last coming in 2017, but all four were in class 1A.
—Pioneer is seeking their 8th sectional title in the past 9 seasons and 13th overall (second in 2A).
—This season marked the first time since 2013 Pioneer lost two regular season games.

Class 1A, Sectional 41: Culver at North Judson
—Blue Jays are 8-2 all time vs Culver, including a 19-0 win in the season opener.
—North Judson has two wins over sectional finalists Knox and LaVille this season.
—Culver’s two tourney wins have come against teams who were over .500 in the regular season. No such regular season wins.
—North Judson eliminated Culver each of the last two seasons, including a heartbreaking 15-14 loss in the 2019 sectional final.

Class 1A, Sectional 44: Triton at Adams Central
—Adams Central is 4-0 all time against Triton, including a 38-14 win in last year’s sectional
—Triton’s lone win against a team still playing came in week 5 over Culver.
—Adams Central seeking their 22nd sectional title, all coming in class 1A.
—AC head coach Michael Mosser has had 11 winning seasons in his last 12 following his inaugural season at Adams Central.
