Fourth Quarter Sends No. 11 IU To Win At Ohio State

 

COLUMBUS, OHIO – A big fourth quarter propelled No. 11 Indiana to a road win at No. 15 Ohio State, 87-75, inside the Schottenstein Center on Saturday afternoon.

 

KEY MOMENTS

  • The Hoosiers (16-4, 14-2 B1G) trailed in the first few minutes of the first quarter but a 10-2 run in the final 3:57 of action put them up 18-12. The first quarter included a high-pressured offense led by senior guard Nicole Cardaño-Hillary who initiated a fast break opportunity for Berger, who had eight points.
  • In a flurry of offense in the second quarter, the Hoosiers shot 50 percent from the floor as it pushed its lead to as any as six in the first portion of the frame. Ohio State (13-6, 9-6 B1G) chipped away, coming within as few as one on two separate occasions but a junior forward Aleksa Gulbe pump fake at the rim and bucket from sophomore forward Mackenzie Holmes gave Indiana a 30-25 lead with just over two minutes before halftime.
  • Indiana would stretch its lead to as many as nine with 36 ticks to play but the Buckeyes had the final word in the first half with back-to-back 3-pointers to cut the lead to 39-36.
  • In its worst shooting performance in the third, Indiana mustered up just a 28.6 field goal percentage as Ohio State took advantage and fell behind with 2:42 remaining.
  • The deficit continued to grow going in to the fourth, as the Buckeyes led by as many as nine just 33 seconds in to the final quarter.
  • Indiana continued to chip away as a 3-pointer by senior guard Nicole Cardaño-Hillary hit one of her three 3-pointers and Patberg completed a conventional 3-point play to come within three with 7:25 to go. OSU would go up by as many as five but it would be held without a field goal for three-plus minutes down the stretch as Indiana capitalized. Another offensive rebound and putback and Patberg drawing the foul sent her to the line to tie the game at 70. It was all part of a 14-0 run that extended to the 1:04 mark.

 

NOTABLE

  • The Hoosiers picked up its first victory in Columbus since 2002 and first win overall against the Buckeyes since 2010.
  • IU also breaks the school record for Big Ten wins with 14 this season. It set the previous record of 13 in 2019-20.
  • Four players scored in double figures behind 20 points from junior guard Grace Berger who had her fifth 20-point scoring performance of the season.
  • Patberg added 19 points and seven rebounds while Holmes added 17 points, eight rebounds and four blocks.
  • Indiana shot a season-high 40 free throws and went 31-for-40 at the line on the afternoon. Their 40 attempts ties for the fourth-most in a single game.
  • Cardaño-Hillary grabbed a career-high 11 rebound as she notched her first double-double of the season.  She now has four career double-doubles (three previously at George Mason) as she also added 16 points as she hit three 3-pointers
  • Gulbe went 6-for-6 at the line as she ended her day in double figures with 10 points.
