Taylor Closes Out Edward Waters for Third-Straight Win

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Facing a short turnaround following Friday’s 29-point rout of East-West, Taylor relied on its defense to secure a 75-66 win over Edward Waters in a noon start on Saturday. The win was TU’s third-straight and gave the Trojans a 2-0 showing at the Saint Francis Tournament.

Taylor forced 17 Tiger turnovers in the contest and held Edward Waters (3-2) under 35.0-percent shooting in each half and to just 32.8 percent from the field for the game.

The Trojans shot 50.0 percent in the first half but saw an eight-point lead shrink to one by the break and needed a strong second-half showing to secure the victory.

The decisive stretch started midway through the second stanza, as Kaden Fuhrmann knocked in a triple to put TU on top for good with 9:08 remaining. Back-to-back buckets from James McCloud and Zach Baugher pushed the spread to 60-53 and a three from Jason Hubbard pushed the lead to 63-55 with 5:14 to play.

Baugher then found the net again to give Taylor a double-digit lead for the first time and the Purple and Gold handled the Tiger press down the stretch and hit a string of key free throws to seal the victory.

Hubbard led Taylor with his third-straight effort of at least 20 points, notching 22 points and six rebounds, while Baugher added 13 points and posted career-highs with eight rebounds and three steals.

Vincent Miranda turned in a strong showing with 10 points, six assists, three steals and only one turnover and CJ Penha secured his second-straight double-double with 12 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks.

Taylor (7-5) is set to close out its non-league schedule on Saturday, January 2, with a home tilt against Oakland City (2-6) at 3:00 pm inside Odle Arena.
