Evansville Memorial Repeats as 2A Champ
In a battle of two of the state’s all-time winningest programs, Evansville Memorial claimed its second-straight Class 2A boys title with a 3-0 victory over Fort Wayne Canterbury.
The title for coach Bill Vieth’s Tigers is the fourth in five years and the sixth overall. That leaves the Memorial program just one behind Canterbury, which owns a state-best seven championships. The Tigers are now 6-0 all-time in state championship games.
Memorial (18-3) dominated throughout, breaking through in the 34th minute on a goal by Garland Hall, with an assist from Evan Harding. The Tigers padded their lead at the first-half horn when Isaac Bennett tallied from 20-yards out.
Memorial junior Evan Garrison netted the final goal in the 78th minute. All told, Memorial outshot the Cavaliers, 17-2 and held a 12-1 bulge in corner kicks. Ben Weikert played the first 79 minutes to record the shutout in goal.
Canterbury (13-5-5) came in seeking its third state title in four seasons, after winning the Class A championship in 2017 and 2018. The Cavaliers, coached by Greg Mauch, finished 3-10-3 in 2019 and started this season 1-4-1 before riding a 16-game (12-0-4) unbeaten streak into the championship match.
Memorial’s Garland Hall receives Cato Mental Attitude Award
Following the match, the IHSAA Executive Committee named Evansville Memorial’s Garland Hall as the recipient of the C. Eugene Cato Mental Attitude Award presented by Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance.
The award is annually presented to a senior, who is nominated by his principal and coach, and has demonstrated excellence in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability during his four years of high school.
He is the son of Jon Mark and Patti Hall of Evansville. He is interested in studying Actuarial Science or Accounting but is currently undecided on his college choice.
Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, a proud corporate partner of the IHSAA, presented a $1,000 scholarship to Reitz Memorial High School’s general scholarship fund in the name of Garland Hall.
