Women’s Basketball Announces Chesterton Graduate Abby Skube as Assistant Coach
GARY, Ind. — First year Indiana University Northwest Women’s Basketball Head Coach Jesse Ford has announced the addition of Abby Skube to the staff in the role of assistant coach.
Ford said our entire program has been lifted up with the addition of Coach Skube. We’ve been able to trust and rely on her since her start this pre-season and she will be a big reason for our success this winter.
“Coach Abby Skube is local to Northwest Indiana area and has some great recruiting ties and connections,” Ford said. “With all of the strong local high school talent here, we are very focused on providing a good fit for these student-athletes who want to stay close to home and continue to play in front of their family and friends. Abby will help keep IUN a top choice for these players.”
Skube was a standout basketball player for NCAA Division I Loyola University, where she also received her Bachelor of Science in Psychology. During her time with the Ramblers, the forward played in 106 games while averaging 6.8 points per contest and shooting 41 percent from the field. After Loyola, Skube attended Valparaiso University for their Accelerated Nursing Program earning her second Bachelor’s Degree this time in Nursing in 2017.
“It was a privilege being able to play at the highest level of collegiate basketball while earning a degree and pursuing my professional dreams, Skube said. “The structure and discipline of the program set me up for a bright future.”
Prior to her time with the Ramblers, the forward was a multi-letter winner for Chesterton High School.
“I am hoping to bring banners and being a great mentor to these women,” Skube said. “I am hoping to guide these student-athletes through the same experiences I went through. Basketball provided her with the opportunities to push myself in overcoming fears, challenges and adversities I would not normally be forced within these stages of life.”
Ford said Abby has been incredibly supportive so far this season and she is a great motivator during practice.
“She is high-energy, our student-athletes respond well to her, and they enjoy being pushed by her each day,” said Ford. “Having played NCAA Division 1 basketball herself in the past, she understands the level of commitment and quality of play required to have success in such a competitive conference like the CCAC.”
Skube is currently a Resident Nurse for Northwestern Medicine and resides in Chesterton, Indiana.
